Surrey Chiropractor Dr. Leong Wong

Surrey chiropractor pixIf only I had known then what I know now I would have realized that chiropractic is more than just a treatment for back or neck pain. I was like most people who had misunderstood what chiropractic represented. Chiropractic has a different viewpoint on health and this is what had changed my life.

My younger years in school involved a great deal of sports and physical work. I was very active particularly in basketball, volleyball, track and field, football and martial arts. Over some time I eventually came to find my way to a chiropractor’s office. After my first chiropractic experience I not only felt my low back pain go away, I felt more enlightened, energetic, alert and I had better posture.

I eventually made the decision to become a chiropractor. Throughout my years of practice I began to see my patients respond to chiropractic care in ways I never imagined. Patients often would seek chiropractic care for specific concerns but amazingly find that their health improve in many other ways as well. Chiropractic care enhances the body’s innate capacity to function better so that it can heal itself.

My personal experience as a chiropractic patient was not the only reason I became a chiropractor. It was my desire to help people that made me feel fulfilled. I couldn’t think of anything I’d rather do than to help alleviate people’s challenges in health, especially through a natural means.

My postgraduate educational experience began at University of British Columbia in the science program. I then transferred to Simon Fraser University to study Kinesiology and Biological Sciences for four years. I eventually went to Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto, where I completed a very intense four-year program. Shortly after graduating from Chiropractic College I completed a three-year specialty program in rehabilitation sciences and attained my Fellowship in the College of Chiropractic Rehabilitation Sciences. Although I have had an extensive educational experience, I still continue to take post-graduate courses to improve my knowledge and skills so that I can provide better care for my patients.

The most inspiring facilitator I have ever had in all of my years of learning is from Dr. Charles Ward. He has taught me that life is full of challenges which can be conquered; and that indecision and fear (…fear of failure, fear of rejection) are what holds us back from being, doing and having what we want in life. If we can just focus on the things we want and face the “fear” and believe in ourselves, we can achieve all of our dreams. We just need to keep taking action and never give up.

My philosophy on Health and Wellness is simply that your health is a result of a series of decisions and actions that build on each other. Many people, unfortunately, make poor health decisions mostly because those choices they make appear unimportant for that moment. For example, someone may choose to eat a meal that is unhealthy over a healthier meal because it won’t hurt them right now. This may be true for the moment however, what most people don’t realize is that multiple poor choices like these will compound over time and eventually negatively affect their health. Just as those compounding effects of these choices can hurt your health it can produce good health if you make the right choices. If you make more of the good, healthy decisions over time you can produce a quality of life beyond what you can imagine.

What you choose to do with your diet, exercise, rest, emotional well-being and chiropractic care on a regular and consistent basis will allow you to live your life with fulfillment, joy, vitality, and freedom. Chiropractic care, if you choose to utilize it on a regular consistent basis, will provide positive, compounding effects over time that will enhance your overall well-being and health for the rest of your life. The patients who respond the best to chiropractic care are those who choose a lifetime of chiropractic care.

My wife, Fenella (who is a Registered Nurse), and I love traveling around the world. We have been fortunate to travel to countries such as Fiji Islands, New Zealand, Australia, United States, Mexico, France, Italy, Greece and China. We will continue to do more traveling especially to places we have never been before. We especially love hiking with our dog, Mars, through the local nature trails and enjoy British Columbia’s natural beauty. Both of us are advanced scuba divers and have been blessed to dive the oceans of British Columbia, Fiji Islands, and Mexico. I often spend my spare time enjoying rock climbing, reading, fly fishing, and photography.   Recently, Fenella and I received the most precious gift of our lives.  We have been blessed with our first born baby girl, Jadyn, who has given us the ultimate joy in our lives.

As part of my personal health practices I get chiropractic adjustments once a week. My exercise routine varies from time to time (so that I don’t get too bored) from rock climbing, working out in the gym, boot camp, hiking and jogging. I do a body “cleanse” (detoxify) twice a year which helps to release all the “toxins” that build up over time. It’s my belief that vaccinations are un-necessary. I make a conscious effort towards my healthy lifestyle to include eating properly, getting enough rest, exercising regularly, drinking lots of water, managing my stress, and reading positive affirmations. I am careful about the amount of exposure to newspapers, TV, and radio because of the negativity and sensationalism. I am not an advocate of taking medications (including over-the-counter drugs) unless it is absolutely necessary and a last resort. I believe that if you keep your body and mind working the best that it can be it can withstand virtually all afflictions. These are natural healthy practices that everybody should include in their lives.

Dr. Sonny Asks some important questions of interest to Surrey residents - Chiropractor Surrey Dr. Sonny Asks...

What's the difference between sick care and health care?
Sick care is largely about relieving or suppressing symptoms. Health care is about improving performance. While sick care is about how you feel, health care is about how you function. Sick care is what you do to treat an obvious problem, and health care is what you do to avoid the problem and advance your well-being.
Can chiropractic cure a child's ear infections?
Chiropractic isn't a cure for anything. Nor is it a treatment for ear infections. However, many children who suffer with ear infections also suffer from spinal problems in their neck, compromising nerves to the ear, depressing the immune system and preventing proper drainage. Can chiropractic help? Find out!
